The Great American State Fair (June 25 – July 10, 2026): This massive 16-day national exposition features pavilions representing every U.S. state and territory. Expect daily themed programming covering American innovation, military appreciation, and community life, alongside family-friendly interactive experiences. Star-Studded Evening Concerts: As part of the State Fair, free evening concerts on the Mall will feature a wildly diverse lineup including Martina McBride (June 25), a "90s Night" with Vanilla Ice and C+C Music Factory (June 26), The Commodores (June 27), Flo Rida (July 2), and Bret Michaels (July 3). The Official July 4th Celebration: The actual 250th Independence Day will culminate in a monumental full-day event on the Mall. It will feature keynote remarks from President Trump, massive choir and marching band performances, and what is being billed as the largest pyrotechnics and fireworks display in world history. Freedom 250 Grand Prix (August 21–23, 2026): For something entirely different, an IndyCar street race is scheduled to take over the roads near the National Mall and Pennsylvania Avenue later this summer. 🏛️ Smithsonian Special Exhibits Under the banner "Our Shared Future: 250," the Smithsonian Institution has launched a system-wide initiative looking at the complex history and future of the nation. The Headline Reopening: Arts and Industries Building Limited Summer Run (June 16 – September 7, 2026): For the first time in years, the landmark Arts and Industries Building (the Smithsonian's second-oldest structure) is reopening its doors for just 83 days. It is hosting a flagship exhibition, "In Pursuit of Life, Liberty, & Happiness," which anchors 250 iconic historical artifacts to tell a big-picture national story. Special Exhibitions Across the Museums "American Aspirations" (Smithsonian Castle): Displayed in the historic Castle this summer, this exhibition brings together some of the Institution's most treasured objects to examine how the nation has lived up to the ideals of the Declaration of Independence. (You can even view the portable desk Thomas Jefferson used to draft the document over at American History). "From These Lands: Sharing Our Natural and Cultural Heritage" (Natural History): A brand-new 2026 exhibition that connects unique objects, diverse cultures, and biodiversity from every single U.S. state and territory. "Bison: Standing Strong" (Natural History): A fascinating look at our national mammal, exploring its cultural significance, its near-extinction, and its surprising history with the Smithsonian (bison actually lived in an enclosure right behind the Castle in the 1880s!). "America’s Presidents" Expanded (National Portrait Gallery): The museum has significantly enhanced its signature presidential portrait collection with new scholarship and programming specifically for the 250th anniversary. "American Stories, American Stamps" (National Postal Museum): A visual deep dive into how tiny, miniature works of stamp art have commemorated and shaped the American identity over generations. 🎨 Bonus: National Gallery of Art While not technically part of the Smithsonian, the neighboring National Gallery of Art is running a parallel America's 250th celebration. They are running three distinct special exhibitions: "Dear America" (Explorations of American identity through art). "American Icon" (How artists have reimagined and transformed the U.S. flag over centuries). "Celebrating American Art" (A massive showcase of their 75,000+ piece collection).
